May the Best Plan Win

Think your safeties are just background players? Not anymore. Madden NFL 26 gives us full control over safety depth, width, and alignment—unlocking new ways to disguise coverage, bait throws, and shut down explosive plays. Learn how to weaponize your secondary.

Take Full Control of Your Secondary

Madden NFL 26 introduces a powerful new layer of defensive customization with the Safeties Coaching Adjustments—giving us unprecedented control over how our safeties align before the snap. Whether we’re trying to bait a deep throw, disguise coverage, or shut down short routes, these adjustments let us tailor our defense to the situation, the opponent, and the play call.

MaddenUniversity originally published this set of tips to help players of Madden NFL 26.  We've updated this article as the game advanced.  Look for when each portion of an article was changed to make sure we have the most up to date information.

To access these settings, press R3 on the playcall screen and scroll to the bottom of the list. You’ll find three new categories: Safety Depth, Safety Width, and Safety Midpoint. Let’s break down what each one does and how to use it.

Safety Depth

This setting controls how far off the line of scrimmage your safeties align. It’s a game-changer for disguising coverage and controlling leverage.

Option Alignment Depth Use Case
Default Standard depth Balanced coverage
Deep 25 yards Protect against deep shots
Prevent 32 yards End-of-half or game situations
Tight 5 yards Aggressive run support or disguise
Close 8 yards Hybrid looks, short zone emphasis

Strategic Tip:

Use Tight or Close to bait a deep throw, then drop into coverage post-snap. Use Prevent only when protecting against Hail Marys or vertical desperation.

Safety Width

This controls how wide your safeties align horizontally. It’s crucial for defending spread formations or compressing against tight sets.

Safety width set to "Wider" aligns safeties outside the numbers to protecte the sidelines.

Option Alignment Width Use Case
Default Standard width Balanced coverage
Spread Slightly wider Defend slot fades or outside leverage
Wide Maximum width Counter 4WR sets or deep sideline threats
Pinch Narrow width Defend seams, TE routes, or compressed sets

Strategic Tip:

Use Wide against 3x1 or 4x1 formations to protect the sideline. Use Pinch when expecting seam shots or quick TE releases.

Safety Midpoint

This controls where your safeties align relative to the hash marks. It’s a subtle but powerful tool for controlling leverage and disguising coverage shells.

Setting the midpoint to the "Weak" aligns safeties to defend the hashes.

Option Alignment Target Use Case
Default Standard midpoint Balanced alignment
Left Left hash Anticipate motion or field tilt
Right Right hash Same as above, opposite side
Strong Passing strength Match offensive strength
Weak Opposite strength Counterbalance or bait throws
Field Field hash Maximize space coverage
Boundary Boundary hash Tight coverage, red zone emphasis

Strategic Tip:

Use Strong or Field to match offensive strength and maximize coverage. Use Boundary when defending short fields or red zone situations.

How to Use These Adjustments Like a Pro

These settings aren’t just cosmetic—they affect how your safeties move, react, and cover space. Here’s how we can use them in real gameplay:

Coverage leverage changes the way safeties play deep coverage.

  • Disguise Coverage: Start with Tight depth and Pinch width, then audible into Cover 4 or Cover 3 to bait a deep throw.
  • Match Personnel: Against 4WR sets, use Wide width and Field midpoint to stretch your safeties and protect the sideline.
  • Control Leverage: Use Strong midpoint and Close depth to defend against quick slants and RPOs.
  • Red Zone Defense: Use Prevent depth and Boundary midpoint to keep everything in front and shrink the throwing window.

Unlock Defensive Tools

The Safeties Coaching Adjustments in Madden NFL 26 give us the tools to outthink and outmaneuver even the most aggressive offenses. Whether we’re playing chess with motion-heavy schemes or locking down vertical threats, these settings let us shape our secondary with surgical precision.
